Know your numbers and what they mean

The Health District offers cholesterol testing three times each month at convenient Fort Collins locations, focusing on people have not been tested recently. They are open to adults who have not had a cholesterol test in the last year and free for Health District residents.

We also hold testing clinics for groups who may lack access to these important tests, including Spanish-speaking communities, residents of permanent supportive housing, and people experiencing homelessness.

At testing clinics, we measure your blood pressure and tell you your blood glucose (sugar) levels, which can detect your risk for diabetes. You can use test results to help you and your health-care provider guide your blood pressure or cholesterol treatment.

Adults may have their cholesterol tested every one to five years, depending on risk. Ask your provider for recommendations.

About the test

We use accurate, state-of-the-art equipment requiring only a simple finger stick for our blood test. Cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure results are available within 20 minutes. Cholesterol results include total cholesterol, HDL. LDL, and triglycerides.

A registered nurse will explain your cholesterol testing results and offer health information. Ask our registered nurses questions about your heart-disease risk and discuss steps for leading a heart-healthy life.

An 8-hour fast is required for best results with our cholesterol blood test. Medications are permitted. Drinking water is encouraged.

Tests are free for residents of the Health District. (See if you are a resident.) Cost is $15 for all others. To be eligible, you must not have received a cholesterol test from the Health District or your health-care provider in the past 12 months.

Appointments are required; call 970-224-5209
